Adam Benforado is a professor, writer, and lawyer.
As a legal scholar, his principal interest is in applying insights from the mind sciences—most notably cognitive psychology—to law and legal theory. He is particularly focused on issues arising in criminal law.
Conducting novel experiments and developing existing findings, Professor Benforado's research is dedicated to uncovering how our legal system may reflect unappreciated aspects of our cognitive frameworks and processes, and, as a consequence, how the law may fail to align with our purported values and fall short of meeting our needs.
As an undergraduate, Professor Benforado studied at Yale University and Oxford University. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and was a Frank Knox Fellow and Visiting Scholar with the Cambridge University Faculty of Law. He clerked for Judge Judith Rogers on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Professor Benforado also worked at Jenner & Block, LLP in Washington, D.C., where he handled trial and appellate litigation matters. He joined the Drexel University Kline School of Law as an assistant professor in 2008 and was granted tenure in 2013. He was a visiting professor at Brooklyn Law School in Spring 2013.
He has published numerous scholarly articles and book chapters, and his op-eds and essays have appeared in a variety of publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, Chronicle of Higher Education, American Scholar, and Boston Review. His bestselling first book, Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice, was published by Crown in June 2015.
An active media voice, Professor Benforado has been interviewed by Larry King, Al Sharpton, Melissa Harris-Perry, and Scott Simon, and been featured on Fresh Air. He regularly speaks to academic audiences, legal practitioners, and the general public about his work. Although he no longer takes cases, he remains a member of the Washington, D.C. and New York bars. |

"Eastern vs. Western Medicine"
Jun. 13, 2017
Doc Mitchell"Eastern vs. Western Medicine"Following his graduation from High School, Doc moved to the Pacific Northwest for his undergraduate study where he began his interest and study of native plants. A lengthy sojourn in Latin America introduced him to indigenous herbal medicine and upon returning to the Bay area, he began studying ethobotany and pharmacognosy with renowned 4th generational botanist and herbalist Christopher Hobbs PhD. This study led to being introduced to the herbal medicine tradition of China and the practice of Traditional Chinese medicine in the West. At that time, Chinese doctors who were refugees from Mao’s cultural revolution were just recently organizing medical schools of Traditional Chinese in the United States. Doc enrolled and was one of the earliest Americans to study this ancient medicine in the west. When his college was formed as a not for profit institution, Doc was asked by his teachers to serve as a member of the board of directors and soon rose to Chairman of the board. It was during this time as board chair that the college received Federal accreditation that included substantial academic and student population growth. Doc’s passion for both medicine and study led to his being asked to join the faculty at Five Branches University (http://www.fivebranches.edu) in 1995 where he continues to serve as professor and associate faculty chair teaching both History and Philosophy and medical case studies, the integration of Traditional Chinese medicine and modern medicine. After 17 years of busy clinical practice Doc, returned to academia for further education, receiving one of the first accredited professional Doctorate degrees in Traditional Chinese Medicine offered in the west. During this return to the classroom as a student, he had the opportunity and honor to studying under the tutelage of well-seasoned and famous“old doctors” from Mainland China and professors from Stanford’s medical school. Doc has practiced traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Los Gatos, California since 1989. While many of his patients come for orthopedic issues, many more have sought him out for the treatment of both difficult “knotted” diseases and fertility issues. His long-standing clinical practice and academic experience have given him unique insights in the treatment of many diseases and conditions. These activities, combined with his rigorous pursuit of academic excellence in teaching, have informed his skills both as a clinician and educator. As a seasoned educator, his knowledge of the medical classics and modern research inform his clinical practice and as a seasoned clinician, his experience informs his teaching of both patients and graduate students. Doc brings this integration of both the best of this ancient medicine and modern medicine to his serene clinic nestled in the woods by the creek in Los Gatos. |

King of McCovey Cove
Aug. 15, 2017
Dave Edlund: King of McCovey CoveDave Edlund is a San Francisco Giants fan. Since becoming an AT&T Park regular in 2005, Edlund has attended more than 300 Giants games, all of which he has spent outside the actual confines of the park. While tens-of-thousands of fans sit in the bleachers, Edlund sits beyond the right field wall in his kayak, blubbing atop the waters of McCovey Cove, waiting for the sounds of an approaching Splash Hit. He is known as “McCovey Cove Dave,” a name that can be found proudly printed on his gameday uniform, an orange hooded sweatshirt that has been dunked in the water of the Bay more times than a plunging San Francisco seagull. After grabbing his first Splash Hit home run in August of 2005, McCovey Cove Dave has scooped-up a total of 24 Cove home runs. More impressively, since the start of the 2010 season, of the 25 Splash Hit home runs hit while he was in the Cove, he has grabbed 21 of them, a mind-boggling .840 batting average. |

The History & technology of the Enigma Cipher Machine
Aug. 29, 2017
Ralph Simpson retired veteran of the technology industry who has developed a keen interest and expertise in the history of cryptography and code-breaking. He is the owner of many examples of the devices used for creating and reading codes throughout history, including an extremely rare original Nazi Enigma machine. The full spectrum of his work is demonstrated at www.ciphermachines.com.
Ralph Simpson of ciphermachines.com presents a fascinating overview of the German “Enigma” cipher machine and its historical significance and role in the outcome in WW2, especially the Allied efforts in breaking the code. He demonstrates use of the machine on one of the very few surviving Enigma units in the world, including changing of the daily keys and the operational procedures used by the Nazis. The breaking of the Enigma code played an enormous role in the successful D-Day invasion of Europe, as described in the incredible book, “Bodyguard of Lies” (https://www.amazon.com/Bodyguard-Lies-Extraordinary-Story-Behind/dp/1599213834)

Understanding American Muslims
Sep. 05, 2017
Maha ElGenaidi, President and CEO, Islamic Network Group:"Understanding Islam in America
Perhaps no community has been more misunderstood and even demonized in recent years in the United States than Muslims. At a time when this community is developing a stronger political voice, prejudice and fear work together to keep it at the margins of acceptance in the broader American social landscape. Why is this happening? And how much have fundamentalists compromised the image of Islam around the world? Maha ElGenaidi will address these and other pressing questions on the Middle East. Maha is the founder of ING and author of training handbooks on outreach for American Muslims as well as training seminars for public institutions on developing cultural competency with the American Muslim community. She received an M.A. in religious studies from Stanford University and B.A in political science and economics from the American University in Cairo. She has taught classes on Islam in the modern world at Santa Clara University, Stanford University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz, and has been recognized with numerous awards, including the “Civil Rights Leadership Award” from the California Association of Human Relations Organizations and “Citizen of the Year Award” from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.
