Behind the Bark of Sea Lions and Seals
Jan. 05, 2021
Laura Gill is the Community Engagement Manager at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito where she leads public program development and implementation, including virtual programs, interpretive resources, and tours. Laura has served in many different education roles at institutions such as Aquarium of the Bay and the Sea Lion Center at San Francisco’s Pier 39, the Roundhouse Aquarium and the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium in Los Angeles, CA which only strengthened her belief that we are all interconnected and dependent on a healthy ocean. Laura was inspired to pursue a career in conservation education after earning her B.S. in Marine Biology from UCSC. In “Behind The Bark”, I will be sharing a brief history of The Marine Mammal Center’s work with rescue, rehabilitation, release, research, and education and then take a deeper dive into the stories of our common patients including sea lions, elephant seals, and harbor seals. I’ll describe the challenges they face, how we care for them at the Center, and how people can get involved to protect them and our shared ocean environment. |

Wildlife Connections: Building tunnels to protect Santa Cruz County Wildlife
Jan. 26, 2021
What THEY Protect The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County is dedicated to protecting and caring for the lands we love. They protect both working lands, like farms and timberland, and natural lands with high conservation value – thus protecting water supplies, wildlife habitats, and open space. In 2011 the Land Trust completed a Conservation Blueprint for Santa Cruz County. The Blueprint calls for the protection of 50,000 priority acres in our county and will guide the Land Trust’s work through 2035. To date, the Land Trust has protected 14,000 acres by working with willing landowners and land conservation partners. Carie Thompson – Access Director Carie joined the “tribe” of nature nerds as a child roaming the woods of northern Wisconsin. As a young adult, she discovered her passion for outdoor education and adventure. She worked as an expedition guide and naturalist, spending time in some of the most beautiful places on earth. When she buckled down to a “real job” she became a California State Park Ranger, a career she held for 15 years. During those years, she participated in all facets of land management, developed an expertise in interpretation, and taught at the Ranger Academy. Carie considers herself extremely fortunate to join the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, where she can use her energy and skills to contribute to such a valuable mission. Laura Dannehl-Schickman – Donor Relations Manager A third-generation Santa Cruz-ian, Laura grew up biking along West Cliff, catching crickets in the field behind her great grandparent’s small orchard in Scotts Valley, and exploring the Wilder Ranch trails and coastal beaches along Highway 1. Laura attended UCSC, where she majored in American Studies. After graduating, she moved to the Bay Area, where she worked in fundraising before attending graduate school at Cambridge University, where she received her MPhil in American literature. Moving to an urban center and then jumping across the pond were two experiences that helped her discover the critical aspect of place to identity and what it meant to be “from Santa Cruz.” Laura is excited to work with an organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the core of what she believes makes Santa Cruz precious – its open spaces and wildlands. |

Why is the sky dark? What’s happening between the stars?
Apr. 13, 2021
The sky is dark at night – this is a fundamental observational fact of cosmology that can be observed by everyone. It also is fundamental to our existence, to our physiology, and to our cultures. The apparent answer to the question “why is it dark at night?” is that (1) the sun is shining on the other side of the earth and (2) the light of the distant stars is much weaker than the sun. But how can the second answer be so when there are so very many stars and they have been shining for so long? And how dark is the sky? And is it dark only to eyes like ours that are sensitive to visible light, or is it also dark to infrared, ultraviolet, x-ray, and radio “eyes”? I will discuss these questions as well as the historical scientific attempts to understand this simple and important observation. Tom Geballe is an Emeritus Astronomer at the Gemini Observatory, in Hilo Hawaii. He received his bachelor (1967) and doctoral (1974) degrees in physics at the University of California, Berkeley, the latter under Nobel prize winner Prof. Charles Townes. Following postdoctoral appointments in physics at U. C. Berkeley and at Leiden University, and a Carnegie Observatory Fellowship in Pasadena, he joined the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) in Hawaii in 1981 as a staff astronomer and then became Astronomer-in-Charge, Associate Director, and Head of Operations. His research interests include the Galactic center, interstellar gas and dust, star formation, novae, supernovae, unusual evolved stars, brown dwarfs, and the surfaces, atmospheres, and aurorae of solar system planets and moons. |

Overview on Proposition 19
May 25, 2021
San Jose Magazine named him one of Silicon Valley’s 100 most powerful leaders. Pulitzer Prize winning author and Washington Post reporter, Haynes Johnson, described Larry Stone in his bestselling book, Sleepwalking Through History, as “bright, articulate; an American rarity, a proven political success in a time of political failure.” He was first elected Assessor in 1994 and overwhelmingly re-elected six times by the residents of Santa Clara County, which stretches north to Palo Alto, south to Gilroy, and includes San Jose, the “Capital of Silicon Valley.” The County boasts a population of 1.9 million – greater than that of 13 states. Stone has been a financial manager on Wall Street and co-founded a successful Bay Area real estate investment and development firm. He served 16 years as a council member and mayor of Sunnyvale, a period during which the city earned an international reputation for effectiveness and became a model for President Clinton and Vice President Gore’s efforts to reform the federal bureaucracy. President Clinton said, “The National Performance Review was modeled in part upon the remarkable reinvention efforts pioneered by the City of Sunnyvale, where Larry Stone served as mayor.” As County Assessor, Stone has overseen remarkable improvements to streamline the operations of his office, eliminate backlogs, and achieve higher levels of public service, all while consistently operating substantially under budget. The State Board of Equalization acknowledged his office as one of the best-managed assessors’ operations in California. Larry Stone also has been an active and effective civic leader in many fields ranging from the arts, to education, to the environment. He was instrumental in co- founding an innovative $11 million education endowment foundation that has contributed nearly $20 million to benefit a local, public elementary school district. A native of Seattle, he has an MBA from the University of Washington and has studied at the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Carmen, have lived in Sunnyvale since 1970, where they raised three sons. |

** We are planning this, but will have to monitor Santa Clara county guidelines. The Rotary year runs from July 1 through June 30, which means that President Andrew Stearns term is nearly over. It is a Rotary tradition that the last meeting of the year be an dinner event that recognizes the outgoing president's successes (and maybe a few goofs) and welcomes the incoming President - in our case Nicholas Welzenbach. We will also recognize club members and give out awards in our appreciation of their service. Cost = $80/pp No host bar 6pm - 7pm, passed appetizers
