Overview on Proposition 19
May 25, 2021
San Jose Magazine named him one of Silicon Valley’s 100 most powerful leaders. Pulitzer Prize winning author and Washington Post reporter, Haynes Johnson, described Larry Stone in his bestselling book, Sleepwalking Through History, as “bright, articulate; an American rarity, a proven political success in a time of political failure.” He was first elected Assessor in 1994 and overwhelmingly re-elected six times by the residents of Santa Clara County, which stretches north to Palo Alto, south to Gilroy, and includes San Jose, the “Capital of Silicon Valley.” The County boasts a population of 1.9 million – greater than that of 13 states. Stone has been a financial manager on Wall Street and co-founded a successful Bay Area real estate investment and development firm. He served 16 years as a council member and mayor of Sunnyvale, a period during which the city earned an international reputation for effectiveness and became a model for President Clinton and Vice President Gore’s efforts to reform the federal bureaucracy. President Clinton said, “The National Performance Review was modeled in part upon the remarkable reinvention efforts pioneered by the City of Sunnyvale, where Larry Stone served as mayor.” As County Assessor, Stone has overseen remarkable improvements to streamline the operations of his office, eliminate backlogs, and achieve higher levels of public service, all while consistently operating substantially under budget. The State Board of Equalization acknowledged his office as one of the best-managed assessors’ operations in California. Larry Stone also has been an active and effective civic leader in many fields ranging from the arts, to education, to the environment. He was instrumental in co- founding an innovative $11 million education endowment foundation that has contributed nearly $20 million to benefit a local, public elementary school district. A native of Seattle, he has an MBA from the University of Washington and has studied at the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Carmen, have lived in Sunnyvale since 1970, where they raised three sons. |

Beekeeping in the Valley of Hearts Delights
Jun. 08, 2021
Niki Canotas of Mike & Niki’s Honey is the local buzz. What started as a hobby that Niki could share with her partner, Mike, has expanded into a thriving honey business. Beyond simply producing honey, Niki is committed to bee rescue and supporting pollination operations for local farms. Based out of Campbell, CA, and found almost exclusively in local stores, festivals and farmers markets, Mike & Niki‘s Honey has committed from its earliest days to supporting local causes. Fundraisers from kid’s karate schools to the Santa Clara Bee Guild to benefit from their gift baskets and other donations. Niki’s motto of “bee happy” has enriched her life and added sweetness to the lives of those who eat either her honey or the produce her honey bees help pollinate. And Niki is just getting started, adding hives, production facilities, and honey-based products to the company lineup in the months ahead. Mike & Niki’s Honey Local Honey, Local Stores, Local Causes. |

** We are planning this, but will have to monitor Santa Clara county guidelines. The Rotary year runs from July 1 through June 30, which means that President Andrew Stearns term is nearly over. It is a Rotary tradition that the last meeting of the year be an dinner event that recognizes the outgoing president's successes (and maybe a few goofs) and welcomes the incoming President - in our case Nicholas Welzenbach. We will also recognize club members and give out awards in our appreciation of their service. Cost = $80/pp No host bar 6pm - 7pm, passed appetizers

About a year after his first talk, David will discuss the state of the streaming entertainment industry (think Netflix, Disney, Warner, Amazon, Apple, Comcast and others). David B. Wells is a High Growth Company Board Member & Advisor. He has focused the last 20+ years on helping consumer businesses grow and has recently shifted towards helping younger companies and the NGO and non profit world, particularly with organizations focused on economic growth in the developing world. He spent nearly 15 years at Netflix, with 8 as it’s CFO, retiring in early 2019, having served as VP of Financial Planning and Analysis prior to CFO. At its core, this book connects us across generations, geography, and the dinner table. Alison Carpenter Davis, a former managing editor at Outside magazine, has written for the Chicago Tribune, the Huffington Post, The Independent (U.K.), the International Herald Tribune, and Stanford Magazine, among others. She also has authored the book Letters Home from Stanford. Adventures in Computer Animation
Oct. 12, 2021
Effects Animation is a broad category of artistry encompassing both naturalistic and other-worldy effects that appear in films and television. These elements include fire, water, and magic which require computer simulation and other sophisticated techniques because of their visual complexity. Instead of drawing or manipulating models, Effects Artists design networks of nodes similar to flowcharts that produce these stunning visuals. Because this work requires knowledge of physics, mathematics, and computer programming as well as artistic fundamentals, Effects Animation is indeed a rare marriage of art and science. Toby Rosen is an Effects Artist working at Dreamworks. He specializes in computer simulations of natural phenomena and other complex effects for feature films at various studios including Disney, Sony, and Dreamworks. He has worked on more than 25 features including Moana, Frozen 2, and Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, which won the Academy Award for best animated feature in 2018. Toby is a graduate of UC Berkeley and Caltech.

Cannabis Dispensaries
Oct. 19, 2021
Los Gatos Town Code currently prohibits all medical marijuana operations and distribution facilities throughout the Town. With recent State law changes, cities and counties across California are exploring these new regulations and the fiscal tax impact of allowing Commercial Cannabis Operations and facilities. This is one of several workshops the Town will be conducting to gather information to help the Town Council decide which types of cannabis-related businesses, if any, should be allowed in Los Gatos and, if allowed, where they would go and how they would operate. To obtain community input, the Town will also be conducting a survey. The goal of the workshops and survey will be to gauge the community’s interest and concerns associated with allowing commercial cannabis businesses to operate in the Town. |
