Until his death last year, Luisa Caballero relied on her husband of 58 years to make repairs to their San Jose home. This year Caballero, 85, got help from the Los Gatos Rotary Club on Oct. 27 during the fall rebuilding day sponsored by Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley.

Along with members of the Los Gatos High School Interact Club and other volunteers, Los Gatos Rotarians painted the house on Galewood Court, trimmed the trees, removed debris and installed a new kitchen hood and bedroom light fixture. The Los Gatos group, one of five local Rotary Clubs participating, was among nearly 700 volunteers, and sponsors who banded together to create safer and healthier homes and communities for 24 low-income homeowners and nonprofits in the South Bay.

Caballero’s activities are limited by her arthritis, but she still helps out at the Milpitas senior center. She told rebuilding day organizers that having the home repairs done would help her tremendously in her day-to-day life.

Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley also sponsors a spring rebuilding day, set for the last Saturday in April. Those looking to volunteer or apply for assistance can visit.
