Inspiration
Jenna Mittelman talked about how the LGUSD has a program that encourages ALL staff to engage in conversations with students and community, the concept of a trusted adult with a badge.
She shared a story of a janitor who knew the kids by name. He noticed a kid having a hard time and went out of his way to help, paying attention and connecting with his specific needs. It’s service above self.

PolioPlus
Rachelle reminded us that April is the time to donate to our Polio Plus campaign. Countless volunteers, health workers, and aid workers are out there on the ground trying to vaccinate children and save lives. They are in often dangerous and hard to reach areas, carrying coolers with life saving vaccines. Let’s help those helpers.

Micro Lending
Tom Boyce talked about our micro lending program through Kiva, loans that change lives. Our club has loans totaling almost $23,000 out there right now to 66 people.
Since 2012 we have loaned $120,000. Please consider giving $100 toward a $15,000 matching grant from the LG Rotary Charities Foundation. See Tom for details.

Music Performance
Two extraordinary student musicians from Union Middle School played a violin duet by Johann Halvorsen for us and blew us all away.

Member Update
John Pencer thanked us all for the card and calls and support during his recent heart surgery.

Speaker
David Wells spoke about trends in philanthropy, based on data from the Bank of America and the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at the University of Indiana.
Our club gave about $266K this year and about 600 volunteer hours.
Note from the Speaker
David Wells, our speaker for the day, wanted to clarify that the economist who used the leaky bucket analogy when discussing the efficiency of aid transfer is actually Arthur Okun.
