Meeting called to order by Vice-President Terri Trotter at 12:30pm.

Diane Eriksson led the pledge of allegiance.

John Pencer gave our inspirational message about a Hollywood star that had his own private studio, never drank and was given every consideration, while staff was neglected. His movies were so successful, they are widely credited with saving Warner Bros. from financial ruin. He packed the box office and his performances eclipsed many of his co-stars. He was temperamental and received 12,000 letters from fans/week…his name was Rin Tin Tin.

Member Spotlight

Grady Jeter—He joined the Rotary two times; once in the 1980’s with John Colwell when the club was vastly different. The club was all men; they met at a bar and the funds raised were mostly from fines. Grady was an orthopedic surgeon working with the US Ski team. With all of his commitments, he dropped out of Rotary.
In 1999, he volunteered his services in Bhutan, which is a small country between Tibet and India. While there, a project creating a library seemed unlikely; but, with the presence and perseverance of a small club and one man, the library was indeed established. After that, Grady joined the Rotary again and has been a member 25 years!

30 For 30:

  • Doug and Marjorie Brent are going to be Grandparents. Congratulations!
  • Sue Heller and the Good Time Singers will be performing August 16th and August 17th.
  • Randy Cobb was at Rotary International in Calgary where people were invited to bring cowboy hats; there were 20,000 of them!

Speaker: Suwanna Kerdkaew, Santa Clara County Fire Chief

Suwanna is the first female Fire Chief in Santa Clara County and serves as the CAL OES Operational Area Fire and Rescue Coordinator, responsible for all fire mutual aid in Santa Clara County. She has a degree in Biology and also possesses a diverse business management background.

Hector Estrada, Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention began his career in 1997. He manages all aspects of the fire prevention program which includes enforcement of the fire code, fire investigation, hazardous materials inspections and fire protection engineering functions.

Dennis Lollie, Assistant Chief of Training began his career as a volunteer firefighter-EMT and joined County Fire in 2000. He serves as the department’s Health and Safety Officer, oversees all recruit and Inservice training and coordinates department participation in the California Incident Command and Certification System.

They are known as a premier fire department and send resources, regardless of where they are needed. They cover EMS emergencies, rescues and wildfires; they also have strike teams to meet those challenges. For example, they sent 25 strike teams (5 engines) to fight the LA fires. Suwanna explained that they have to adapt to change because the wildfires of today, with climate change, react vastly different than wildfires used to as a predicted model. She also presented slides of how to better protect our homes from fires, including different zones of management.

Suwanna looks to the future as challenging, as well as exciting, in new ways to meet those challenges. For more information visit: sccfd.org
